Century 21 Port Douglas Real Estate believes that the Federal Government’s National Urban Policy – Our Cities, Our Future: a national urban policy for a productive, sustainable, liveable future is a positive step towards defining a long-term, national vision for affordable housing in Australian cities.
Whilst the Port Douglas property market is not directly effected by the urban policy, our regional office is very aware of the importance of affordable and sustainable housing for the future of Australia as a nation.
This policy paper goes some way in recognising that there are issues concerning the supply and affordability of housing in Australian cities. Hopefully the Federal Government will also include a future plan for regional areas including Port Douglas, Queensland.
The policy, which takes a top down approach to enhancing Australia’s long-term productivity, sustainability and liveability, in part identifies a series of short term and medium to long-term Government initiatives to improve the supply of appropriate mixed income housing.
Such actions include progressing reforms to deliver greater housing supply and affordability and superior zoning and planning approvals processes, as well as supporting the priority approval and construction of aged care housing that is well integrated with urban areas.
The policy outlines some positive, much needed objectives.
We hope that the Government is serious about implementing this vision, as the ability of many Australians to afford housing will eventually depend upon it.
